I hear your voice - Review

First of all there are going to be a lots of spoilers so please don't read if you don't be want to be spoiled.
Now grab a yourself a cup of tea and get comfortable because this is going to be loooooooong.

Overall thoughts on the show:

I already told you in my mini review here that how much i am enjoying this and now i can just say that oh this show. Just so, so may feels.

I hear your voice in my opinion is a total package. It managed to bring all sorts of emotions in me. It made me laugh out loud literally and made me cry as well at many parts. There was suspense, action humor, romance . It managed to hit all right spots in my heart even though there were some parts where i had to roll my eyes but i can say that good stuff overshadowed the bad stuff.
I will admit that i was a little hesitant to start this one because firstly it had a noona relationship and secondly it had humor and i am very very picky about both the things. I've never been really satisfied with the nooa relationship which i have watched or read till date, i believe there needs to be something extraordinary to pull this through because this is not your usual conventional relationship and for humor I love it
but for me to actually enjoy it, it needs to match my taste. I hear your voice excelled in both the aspects and i am glad that i took a chance and watched the show because otherwise i would have missed something really really good.

Thoughts on characters:

Lawyer jang hye sung:

This is my second Korean show and my first of all these actors so when i started it, there were no expectations on the actors part. Although i had no expectations but i have to say that le boo young's character of lawyer hye sung stole the whole drama and the way she delivered it, she completely nailed it. Even if this show would have zero plot, no story. Even if this show would have been a complete waste of time i would have still watched it only because of lawyer hye sung because her character is that good. I was not hooked  to this show from the first episode but the thing that made me come back again and again for the first 3 episodes was hye sung.

Hye sung's character is completely not likable she is not passionate about her job and is only working as a public defender because it has a good pay we can see that in the early episodes how uninterested she is in her work. She is not humble, often comes out as rude, no manners whatsoever, eats dog food, her house is messy.

She is not big on showing emotions, she will never say sorry even though she knows she is wrong. She's self centered, stubborn, proud but still she is my favorite character. I can go on to saying that she is my favorite female television character.
What makes her character so likable is that its relatable. Even though with all these traits she is not evil she is very much a normal human being with normal human emotions. She cares about the people the she loves even though she might never express it and she can go to extreme measures to protect them. We can see that on numerous occasions

In episode when 8 when min ju gook is being tried for her mother's murder and she wants him to go to jail so her mother could get justice and for that she asks prosecutor Do Yeon to help her and she even goes on to her knees to convince her even though they are not on the best terms at that time but she still swallows her pride and she also says sorry for that fireworks accident when they were young even though she was not wrong then.

She has wit, class and she is sassy. Her inner monologue is completely hilarious
In episode 16 when soo haa refuses to tell her, his dream. She thinks that it must have been erotic dream because after all he's a guy.

Did i tell you how much i love her?

she can be funny without even trying to

lmao

but she wears the ridiculous and sass with so much attitude its so endearing

This is the revolving door where she gathers her thoughts and while most people take important decisions in the shower hye sung does it here!

Unlike other female characters her character is strong, independent and so bad ass.

while hye sung is cool, collected and calm she has her moments too and like every normal person she doubts herself and needs assurances.

She may not be expressive when it comes to love but she is very protective of the people she loves and she is loyal to the core
when in episode 18 soo haa receives a letter to appear in court for attempted murder of hye sung (not deliberate though its an accident). Hye sung asks him to deny that even because she does not want his life to be ruined

and can we just appreciate her fainting skills. How awesomely she faints!
She's so natural. I can't even.

I love how imperfectly perfect her character is. She has flaws and all but all that makes it more lovable. There's so much more i want to say about her character but i will discuss when we discuss the romance part.

Park soo haa

Does that gif makes your heart beat faster and give you butterflies in your tummy? Isn't he adorably cute?

This is the first time ever i have been 100.1% satisfied with two leads of a show although boo young's character hye sung is a teensy bit higher if i rate the them but so haa is no less than her.

so haa is a caring, compassionate high school student and like hye sung he also loves fiercely and is very loyal and protective of the people he loves. Ever since hye sung save his life when he is 8 years old. He vows to protect her and he does a damn job at that.

He is determined, committed and so completely in love and he never leaves an opportunity to tell hye sung how much he adores her. He is a wonderful friend as well. Below are two of my favorite scenes where this part of his personality shows.
when Sung Bin tries to commit suicide and he saves her

And another one where he tells Sung Bin that he does not like her and after he leaves her in the library he calls other friend of their (i don't remember his name) and tells her to take care of sung bin. *sigh* these 2 scenes show much loving and caring he is.

Even though his world is noisy but yet he is so alone. He has no family and no friends that truly understand him and this part of his personality is so well portrayed by lee jun suk.

And all the time when they showed flashback of soo haa's childhood we got to know how troubled his life was after his father's death.
There were also some scenes that completely took my breath away. The one where he gets his memory back.
Wow Just brilliant.

and the one where min joon gook tells soo haa that he has kidnapped hye sung.
His pain and trouble looks so real. Bravo lee jun suk

Another aspect of so haa's personality which i loved was when he promised hye sung that he will never kill min joon guk.

He tells her that he will never live a life of a beast and kept his promise even though at times it was very difficult for him to do so.

And i also loved how, when he was going to save hye sung, he called lawyer cha and asked him to save them both because he doesn't believe in that self sacrificing shit and he wants to live and experience everything with hye sung. I loved that he's selfish in a sense he wants to live his life with hye sung

one other thing i loved is how wonderfully he portrayed the role of desperate and tortured lover when hye sung avoids him  for a short time after he looses his memory

and now can we just talk about how haawwwt he is? *fans herself*

and so adorable

and so handsome *swoon*

we can clearly see it in this show how brilliant Le jun suk is as an actor. Bow down to the king

Lawyer cha

Initially i found lawyer cha annoying and irritating.
do you really blame me for that?

I thought he was going to be the Jacob of "I hear your voice" and when he confesses his love for hye sung i thought this show is going to be turned into another ridiculous love triangle but thank you lord it didn't turn out that way.

Lawyer cha is awkward, a nerd, a derp, hilarious sometimes embarrassing.
The biggest mistake lawyer cha ever does is that when he proves min joon guk not guilty in the hye sung's mother's murder case. He literally digs his own grave and that mistake is a deal breaker for his and hye sung's short romantic relationship. I have honestly never been as angry as i was when i found out that lawyer cha proves min joon guk innocent in the hye sung's mum's murder case.
Although in the later episodes he somewhat makes up for that.

Best thing about lawyer cha is that how passionate he is about his work and i also loved how he convinced de yeon to not call soo haa in an attempted murder case of hye sung. So many things could have gone wrong if he had not been portrayed the way he was. He was a perfect blend of awkward, compassionate, embarrassing, loyal and hilarious.

Prosecutor Seo Do Yeon

Do yeon can be so easily cast out as the villian of the show in the initial episodes but after a few episodes we realize that its not like that and i liked the growth of her character by the end of the show.
Initially she turns out as a hard and a rough prosecutor and i thought she will be against hye sung in every case.
But as the show progressed i understood her character more and more.
Her scenes with her mother were very heartwarming

But i really felt for her during Hwang Dal Joong's case. When the truth is revealed that she is actually Hwang Dal Joong's biological daughter and whatever followed throughout made me really really feel for do yeon.
Her breakdown in the court was just uggh gut wrenching.

and when she tries to establish a relationship with her biological father in the short time she has with him is really sweet

and in episode 17 when she asks about hye sung when she's hurt after that min joon guk's fiasco it clearly shows that she is no enemy of hye sung and deep down she cares about her.

I really loved do yeon's character over all. Her development and character growth looked real and believable
Although i do feel that she is way too skinny to the point that she didn't look good. Someone make this girl eat something

Min joon guk

Min joon is clearly the villain of the show and it was very easy to hate him but while he gave me creeps and goosebumps in many scenes in the end i couldn't help but feel sorry for him.
I didn't really pay much attention to him in the start i was like yeah he is a killer this is a crime drama so what? The thing i loved the most was that he was not just a crazy psychotic serial killer, killing people just for the sake of killing. He had a strong story supporting him. I got really interested in him when they showed the first flashback of him and soo haa arguing by that fishing pond. When he says that it was soo haa's father that started it all. That was the point when i realized that he also has a back story and a reason to be like this and from then on-wards i was really curious to learn about the whole story.
The story was revealed in bits and pieces and the when they reveal  the whole story in a flashback that was one of my favorite part of the show.

Lets suppose we can say that Min joon gook had  his reason to kill his soo haa's father but he turns into a real monster the minute he kills hye sun's mum who is completely innocent. Like it is said in the show that the minute you kill someone, no matter whatever reasons you have to support that act, you are not a victim anymore. You are a culprit.
While min joon guk couldn't save his wife soo haa's mother didn't survive either and she died one month after the surgery, that was min joon guk's revenge right there if he would have thought rationally but he let the hate and rage consume him completely that he couldn't even differentiate between right and wrong. What he did to hye sun's mum was really evil and also all the blackmailing, kidnapping etc and every time he tried to justify his act by saying that he was just trying to get justice for his wife

I think the writers did wonderful job in orchestrating his character. I really loved hating him and his back story really broke my heart.

Lawyer Jang Hye sung's mum

Even though hye sun's mum was just there for a few episodes she was clearly a treat to watch.
My experience with K drama mums has been relatively good, though I've heard there are really bad and evil ones out there. Lets just say that i never encounter such evil mum's because mothers are such sweet characters i can not imagine them being evil and plotting shit etc.

Hye sun'g mum is just like every other mum who loves her child and wants the best for her but she has her own uncanny way of showing her love for hye sung. She is also funny as hell. Now we know where hye sung gets most of her personality from.

Like i said above i can't imagine mums being evil similarly it makes me all sad when there is no good relationship between parents and children in a tv show. I am glad that hye sung and her mum shared a wonderful relationship. Right from the first episode we can see that hye sung and her mum have a special bond.
In the first episode hye sung's mum believes in her and defends her.

One of my favorite scenes of her is in episode 3 when she is so excited that hye sung got a job as a public defender that she starts dancing around kissing her phone. Though on phone she tries to appear normal and tries to act as if its not a big deal but hye sun is right down the street and sees everything.

and when she puts all the posters of hye sung because she is so proud of her getting the public defender job.

Her own unique way of showing her love for her daughter.

isn't she just awesome?

And when she is killed that's the most heartbreaking scene ever. I honestly did not expect that she will really die.

One of my favorite quotes of the show is the parting words of hye sung's mum. When min joon guk is about to kill her he makes her talk to hye sung and what she says to her is  "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. If you live that way the whole world will become handicapped. Don’t waste your life by filling it with hate for someone else. You only live once… so you should live your life loving those that are around you. All those people who are rude to you its because they are jealous. Because you are so fortunate. So don't hate them. Don't be mean to them. Feel sorry for them."

A big round of applause for mama hye sung!!

I love how even after she dies she has a special relationship with hye sung. In episode 9 the scene where we see that hye sung still texts her mother to tell her about her daily life and asking her advice.

uggh so heartbreaking

And one of my favorite moment is that when hye sung is very proud of herself after she gives back to do yeon's father. And the way she looks up at the sky and says "Mom, did you see that? Isn't my charisma the best?”

Aaaah best scene ever!

My thoughts on the plot/story line

Not only did this show had well crafted characters but it had a wonderfully written story line as well. Obviously there were many roll your eyes moments but the good stuff outweighs the bad stuff.

First of all i loved how each character had a back story. There was a reason why they were that way. I can't think of a single character that i found useless or felt was just put there just for the sake of it.
In the early episodes we see lawyer shin visiting a prisoner at regular basis. Lawyer shin and Prisoner Hwang Dal Joong share special relationship and we get to see that when his story slowly and gradually reveals.

Prisoner Hwang Dal Joong's stroy is honestly heartbreaking. He serves prison for 26 years for a crime he did not commit. He spent half of his life in prison and lost his daughter as well and when he finally gets justice he only has few months to live *sigh*

When he finally gets justice and lawyer shin sheds a few tears *MY HURT JUST UGGH I CAN'T*

His case did made me tear up and also during his trial we got to see lawyer shin in action. Hye sung and lawyer shin worked together and to be quite honest i was waiting to see that! They were soo good, so good in their element.

I also loved soo haa's friend Sung Bin. She should have been annoying because she is crazy over soo haa but in fact it was fun to watch and plus she shares a wonderful relationship with hye sung as well

when in episode 17 hye sung gets kidnapped i thought that it will be our usual kidnapping scene. Girl gets kidnapped the boy being the knight in shining armor runs to save her damsel in distress. The boy and the bad guy fight and the police arrives at the time when the bad guy is about to kill the good guy and they are saved and taken to hospital but i was glad the writers didn't turn it into cliche, predictable scene.
The whole kidnapping scene was wonderfully portrayed. I loved how min joon guk first tricked hye sung to come to him and then how he calls soo haa to tell him that hye sung is with him.

But the part where i literally stopped breathing for a moment was when min joon guk tries to provoke soo haa into killing him by telling him that he has murdered hye sung but soo haa  understands that he is tricking him because min joon guk is wearing black glasses. He is wearing glasses so that soo haa does not reads his mind. That whole scene was completely mind boggling.

And when soo haa tells him that he will not fall for his trick min joon guk's face is priceless.
Kudos to the writer

Now onto some parts which made me roll my eyes
The time during soo haa goes missing and when he is found again and we learn that he has amnesia! Huh? do you had really to put that in?? But thankfully writers didn't really drag the amnesia thing and soo haa got his memory back. Which was really funny as well because that doesn't happen in real life. You memory doesn't go and comes back in the blink of an eye.
The other part where soo haa is being prosecuted for the murder of min joon guk and apparently the evidence etc is all against soo haa but lawyer hye sung is fighting tooth and nail to prove that soo haa is innocent and suddenly there's a big reveal that min joon guk is still alive! Of-course min joon guk is still alive duh.
The only evidence of min joon guk's death was his hand which was found at the fishing pound where soo haa and min joon guk argued but the whole thing about min joon guk being alive was shown in such a dramatic way. I was like, i knew it all along. It was so obvious.

But the good stuff outweighs bad stuff and even being cliche and predictable at some parts, this show managed to keep me interested throughout with its solid plot and wonderful characters and I loved how each and every character is perfectly blended with the story line.

My thoughts on the romance

Omg where do i start? these two are the epitome of perfection.
Even with such a wide age gap they both have such a wonderful chemistry together and are so natural. If i wouldn't have known that bo young is already married i would have thought that there is something definitely going on behind the scenes.

Their romance is not your usual conventional romance. They have a 7 years age difference. Hye sung is already settled while soo haa is till a high school student. They start living together before they are even friends *thank you min joon guk* and worst of all soo haa can read each and every thought of  hye sung by looking in her eyes *gasp*
And even with all these reasons for them to not be together they find all possible reasons to be together.

Soo haa vows to protect hye sung when he is only 8 years old and he searches for her after they part ways and when he meets her again after 11 years he has definitely not forgotten her and he stills remembers his promise. Soo haa was already in love with hye sung, it is hye sung who takes time to come around and accept soo as a man and not treat him as a kid.

Hye sung fights her feelings for soo haa for a long time and even ignores him when he looses his memory. Telling him lies that they both hated each other.
But after all, these are matters of hearts and you don't get to choose to get who you fall for.

I especially loved that part where lawyer cha wants him and hye sung to be together but she politely tells him that its not in her hands. No matter how much she pretends to ignore soo haa her heart just won't accept anyone else. AWWWWWWWWW

And when for the first time hye sung lets her guard down in front of soo haa and tells hims all about her fears and also that she likes him that's the most asdfghjkasdfghjkldfghj

“I like you, Soo Ha. As a brother. As a friend. And also… as a man. Ever since I started liking you..  I’ve come to hate and fear your ability. Because I’m starting to have so many thoughts that I don’t want you to know about… Every time you catch me during one of my moments… I feel like I’m going to come to resent you. When I think about those resentments could end up hurting you… it rips my heart into pieces. And even outside of that… there are so many other reasons why we can’t be together. That’s why I believe that we have to put an end to our feelings. But even in spite of all that, I still like you. A lot. So… let’s not waste the time we have together by thinking about the end. Let’s look at each other in the face, and laugh when things are funny and always be honest with everything that we talk about. Let’s spend our time that way. Okay?”

and the kiss that follows just turns me into a puddle of goo
I love how comfortable hye sung and soo haa are with each other even before the become a couple, Even before they start dating hye sung and soo haa get along really well, they are great friends and they share such a unique and wonderful bond.

we see numerous times in the show how soo haa is completely and irrevocably in love with hye sung and he never leaves an opportunity to tell her that how much he adores her and while hye sung may not be that expressive she does these little things that show that she loves so haa as much
For instance when soo haa goes missing for a whole year we see how worried and tensed she is. We can see the pain the agony she goes through and during that time she goes back to her old, uninterested self regarding her work. It seemed like soo haa brought the best in her.

And how troubled she is when min joon guuk tricks her into believing that he has kidnapped soo haa we see how she doesn't even attend the trial instead she runs to save soo haa.

When soo haa gives her the necklace she rejects it at first but later she wears his gift and when soo haa sees it she acts as if its not a big deal. LMAO crazy girl

I love how much faith she has in soo haa when everyone believes that he has killed min joon guk

And when she finally confesses her love to soo haa. MY GOD that's the most unique, different, cutest love confession scene i have ever witnessed on television.
That time hye sung fears that soo haa might end up in jail and she may never be able to tell him how much she loves him and when she sees him returning home she runs to him and hugs him and pours out her heart and soul to him

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry for pretending like I didn't, when I depended on you more than anyone. I’m sorry for not saying it, even though I love you more than anyone. I’m sorry for thinking of the end and being anxious about it while looking at you. I’m sorry for all of it!”

But when soo haa tells her that he's not going to jail i love how utterly mortified she is of overreacting how she keeps saying to herself "humiliation, utter humiliation" and asks soo haa to forget whatever she said to him there *LOL*

But soo haa reminds her that she can not hide anything from him and asks her to say i love you to him again and this time she barely whispers and soo haa says to her "What did you say? I can't hear you" And then she finally closes her eyes and tells him that she loves him for real *gaaaaah i just died* and then finally after sharing 2, 3 eskimo kisses, they kiss for real. *I swear they are trying to kill us with this*

One of my favorite thing about their relationship was how they are there for each other during the best and the worse times.

When hye sung's mother dies i love how he steps in and helps her heal

even though she blames him for the death of her mother when she says to him “I’m hating you thousands, tens of thousands of times a day—that all this is because of testifying in that courtroom ten years ago; that all this is because of you!” She asks with tears in her eyes if he wants to hear worse, and even though it clearly upsets him, soo ha never leaves her side and endures all the pain that her harsh words cause him he says, “Go ahead. I’ll listen to it all.” and adds: “Say it. You can swear too. I’ll sit by your side and listen to it all.” *WHY SO DAMN PERFECT SOO HAA! WHY?*

I love how they both accept each other with their flaws and all.

Another aspect i loved the most is how soo haa promises hye sung that he will never kill min joo gook and he will never be a monster like him when she aks him not to kill him

“If you do, then all the reasons disappear – what a terrible person Min Joon Gook is, why we hated him – those things disappear. The moment we kill him, we cease to be victims, and just become murderers.”

I love the words she says to him. I believe they deliver a very strong message.

The scene where hye sung wears a visor so that soo haa is not able to read her thoughts because obviously thoughts are private information and you get all sorts of thoughts even about the person you love the most and you do not want to share them .That's something every person should be allowed to take liberty with.
But with soo haa and hye sung that is not the case so hye sung in order to protect her thoughts wears this ridiculous visor but soo haa says such sweet words to her that i completely melt, melt and melt.

“If you’re mad at me, then tell me instead of hiding it. I won’t get hurt no matter what you’re thinking. I understood when my own uncle abandoned me. Even when you called me an ankle grabbing gum shoe… and even when you told me that it was your fault that your mother passed away… I just accepted your thoughts and just let it all go. And I’m going to continue to do so. I’ve heard the worst that you could think of me, and have accepted them all. And I’ve also seen the worst of you, and accepted them all. No matter what you say to me in the future and what you show me… I’ll never be disappointed in you. So… don’t use this to hide your face.”

*is he even for real?*

*how many of you died of feels reading his words?*

Love and acceptance, that's the most important thing in every relationship. To accept each other whole hardheartedly is what everyone wants from each other and i love how that comes so easily in hye sung and soo haa's relationship.

And another scene where hye sung learns the truth about soo haa's father. When soo haa tells her how he feared that she will dump him if she knew the truth and the reply that hye sung gives to her
"Do i look like someone who is going to dump you over something like that? I have told you multiple times that i have personality that outshines most people's." *LMAO* and then she gets serious and says "Don't blame yourself. Its not your fault."

I love how everything is all open and bare in their relationship. There are no secrets, they are aware of their good and bad and that in itself is very daunting and terrifying but i love how their love is strong enough that things like hye sung's thoughts and soo haa's fear can not break them.

The connection that hye sung and soo haa share is unlike any other i have ever seen. The writers have brilliantly crafted out their romantic relationship and made it look so believable and real. Thumbs up to the writers for their exceptional work here.

Favorite romantic scenes

Big things and grand gestures are wonderful but the things that show how genuine two people are, is the little things that they do for each other and this OTP, my dear friends have lots of such cute, sweet moments.

In episode 7 when hye sung' throat is sore because of all the shouting she does at the trial. I love how soo haa asks her to just think what she wants to say to him

*Lets ALL collectively say AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW*

and when soo haa fixes her street light because she's afraid of the dark

or simple things like carrying her books for her and or letting her walk on the sidewalk.

Looking after each other

helping each other with the domestic work

And when hye sung tells him to reassure her if she did the right he brought her a teddy bear in which you can record your voice and her records himself saying "Good jod, hye sung"

*and this little gesture just makes my knees go weak and my bones go soft*

and in episode 15 when hye sung gets slapped by do yeon. Soo haa  puts the bag of frozen peas to soothe her. *gaaaaaaaah*

This scene where soo haa falls in her lap, They are supposed to be angry with each other but he falls in her lap and they burst into laughter. *Staaaaaph with the cute*

Now onto some of my favorite hugging and kissing scenes

The one in Episode 18 *simple holding each other it looks like they have found heaven on earth*

Their first kiss *I love how soo haa grabs her waist and kisses her. Just like that*

The back hug *Every Korean drama has a back hug*

Or just simply being adorable

The forehead kisses *I love it when a guy kisses a girl on the forehead. There is something so innocent and sincere about it*

Favorite angst-y scenes

Overall I hear your voice is hilarious and filled with funny moments but there are some scenes which made me bawl and the 3 scenes which stand out the most are

The one where hye sung learns about her mum's death

and at the funereal where she breaks down in uncontrollable tears.

The whole scene was just so gut wrenching. My heart broke into million pieces seeing hye sung fall apart like that.

And the scene where hye sung breaks down after min joon guk is acquitted for her mother’s murder.

The way she cries uncontrollably. Her sobs and screams just pierced through my heart and i am not going to lie i was crying along with her right there.

I was blown away by bo young's wonderful performance. If there are Oscars in south Korea bo young should definitely get one for this.

And the last scene which turned me into a slobbering mess was the one where the whole story of min joon guk is revealed through flashbacks.
We learn how min joon guk works really really hard to earn money for his wife's treatment and how they find the transplant but the doctors would not operate on her because soo haa's father manipulates them into operating on his wife instead. Yes that was really evil.
When min joon guk is pleading and begging the doctors to save his wife. Arrrggghh that scene tore me apart and how his wife is saying to him that she doesn't want to die!

Final thoughts

Just going to end it on this quote by my favorite author because exactly how i feel about this show.

“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”
