Doctor Stranger - Episode 1 Review

The much anticipated lee jong-suk's latest show "Doctor Stranger" was premiered yesterday on SBS.

Synopsis:
Doctor stranger is a story about  Park Hoon a doctor, who has a genius IQ. Park Hoon (Lee Jong Suk) is raised in North Korea to become a doctor by his doctor father. After Hoon becomes an accomplished chest surgeon, he defects to South Korea and goes to work in the prestigious Dongwoo University Hospital. As he tries to adjust to his strange new life in South Korea, Hoon does his best to work alongside Han Jae Joon (Park Hae Jin), a Harvard graduate who first discovers Hoon’s talent, while catching the eye of Oh Soo Hyun (Kang So Ra), Jae Joon’s fiancée and the daughter of the hospital chairman. Anesthesiologist Song Jae Hee bears a strong resemblance to Han Seung Hee (both played by Jin Se Yeon), Hoon’s girlfriend back in the North whom he wants desperately to come join him. Can the genius doctor do what it takes to make a new life for himself and his love in the South?

My Thoughts:

I actually loved the episode it was very intense some parts were real tearjerkers and i already know that this show is going to be a lot angst-y unlike "i hear your voice" In the first episode we see that its the year 1994 and park hoon is a young boy.

"I hear your voice" anyone?

America is about to attack north Korea which may result in a full scale war between north and south Korea. Hoon's father who is a doctor is sent to north Korea to treat the PM in order to prevent the war from happening. After the successful surgery and the confirmation that war is not going to happen park hoon's father plans to go back to south Korea but unfortunately that is not what happens. They are forced to stay in north Korea  and over there in south Korea the government does nothing to bring them .

Now park hoon is a young boy studying to be a doctor in north Korea he also has a pretty girlfriend Song Jae-hee whom he plans to marry.

They actually met when they were younger during the time when park hoon's father did the PM's surgery.

I actually loved the scenes between hoon and jae-hee and i already ship them.

They do seem to have a great chemistry though i can't say much about it since we have seen only one episode yet but they looked kinda cute and jong suk portrayed the romantic role of a boyfriend and later on as a distraught lover perfectly

This hug though ♥

But soon there is trouble in paradise. Their happiness is short lived when hoon goes to Jae-hee's house to meet her father officially. He sees that the family has been captured by the north Korean government although he sees jae-hee's for a short period and they manged to kiss in the rain! LOL. No in all seriousness that kiss was one of my favorite part of the show. Lots of passion and emotion in that kiss. LOVED IT.

Hoon is now determined to find jae-hee and now fast forward 5 years later we see that hoon is now officially a doctor he lives at some medical center solely dedicated to maintaining health of the north Korean leaders. The ones who are brought in can never leave the center and the ones who try it are killed. Hoon is asked to do a surgery of a political prisoner and his daughter. Hoon refuses to do that but later he comes to know that that political prisoner's daughter is actually jae-hee. He recognizes her by seeing the friendship bracelet that she's wearing which he gave to her many many years ago when they were young.

Hoon in order to save her decides to operate on her. Which i found really weird. I mean how can he operate on someone he loves so much. I know that he's a doctor but he has an emotional connection with her since he loves her so much but anyway he operates on her and saves her life

And now he vows to himself that he will protect her no matter what.

In the last scene hoon's father asks him to go to Budapest because that's the only way for hoon to escape but hoon refuses to leave his father and in the end when his father is going back after visiting hoon. He is shot down and killed. That scene totally made me cry. I really really loved hoon's father. The father son relationship is so lovely and they way they calmly and silently supported each other through out. It was very cruel of the officials to kill his father like that since he devoted all his life to north Korea and did whatever they asked him to do. And hoon witnessed his father's murder and they way he kept calling was truly heartbreaking.

I see a lot a of potential to this show. I think the story line is unique the actors are really good. The first episode has definitely left me wanting more and i am looking forward to the next episode and to see how this story unfolds. Like i said above i am total hoon and jae-hee shipper.

I feel they have already suffered too much with jae-hee in prison, tortured and tormented for a crime she did not commit fingers already crossed  for a happy ending. I also have a feeling that this show will take me on a emotional roller-coaster. There are gonna be a lots of tears while watching this show and i am not sure that watching this is while its still a WIP is a good idea but really i love me some angst-y goodness!
